On December 19, 2020, at approximately 6:45 pm, deputies assigned to South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station responded to several 9-1-1 calls, where two men were reportedly shot and one of the men was still armed with a handgun, in the area of 104 Street and Burin Avenue.

When deputies arrived, nearby residents directed them to the driveway of a house at 4416 West 104 Street, where one of the men was hiding. As deputies approached, they saw Moises Arreola, a 32 year-old Los Angeles resident, attempting to hide from deputies, behind a large planter at the end of the driveway. Arreola was armed with a handgun and refused to follow deputies’ commands to surrender. A deputy involved shooting occurred and Arreola was struck by gunfire. Deputies approached Arreola and recovered two pistols from him. Los Angeles County Fire Department Paramedics responded and pronounced Arreola dead at the scene.

At the same time, additional deputies had arrived at the scene and located Sergio Becerra, a 38 year-old Los Angeles resident, lying on Burin Avenue, north of 104 Street, a short distance from where Moises Arreola was hiding. Becerra had suffered a gunshot wound to the flank and was holding a semi-automatic pistol in his hand. Deputies disarmed Becerra and additionally recovered a loaded revolver from his pants pocket. Los Angeles County Fire Department Paramedics responded to the scene and Becerra was transported to Harbor General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead as a result of his gunshot wound.

No deputies or other civilians were injured in the incident.

The investigation revealed that Moises Arreola and Sergio Becerra arrived at the location together. They were armed with two pistols each and both shot at a victim and his house near the intersection of Burin Avenue and 104 Street. After firing numerous rounds, they fled from the scene on foot, when Arreola was struck by a passing car. He then ran and hid at the location where deputies ultimately located him and the Deputy Involved Shooting occurred. Sergio Becerra was inadvertently struck by gunfire from Arreola during the initial assault. The firearm assault by Arreola and Becerra was captured on closed circuit video, which was reviewed by investigators and held as evidence.
