On August 22, 2020, at approximately 9:52 pm, East Los Angeles Station deputies received a hit-and-run just occurred call. The informant of the call stated a vehicle had struck her parked car and the driver of that vehicle left the location in a different vehicle and had now returned.

Deputies arrived and saw the vehicle that struck the informant’s vehicle, parked and inoperable. They observed four individuals standing around the vehicle, including 27-year-old Rigoberto Moreno.

Immediately upon exiting their vehicles, one of the deputies observed Moreno lift up his t-shirt with one hand and remove a black semi-automatic pistol from his waistband. A Deputy Involved Shooting (DIS) occurred and one of the men standing next to Moreno was struck by gunfire, one time in the ankle area.

Moreno ran from the scene and fled through Bristow Park, while still holding the semiautomatic handgun. Deputies immediately provided medical care to the individual struck by gunfire until Los Angeles County Fire Department Paramedics arrived on the scene, and he was transported to a local hospital.

A containment of the area was established, and Rigoberto Moreno was ultimately found hiding inside a vehicle in the backyard of a residence blocks from the initial location. He was taken into custody without incident.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

Although an extensive search was conducted, the semi-automatic handgun, possessed by Moreno at the time of the shooting, was not located.
