Police officers repeatedly asked a city man to put down a knife before fatally shooting him outside his home earlier this month, according to videos released by the Attorney General's Office.

Daniel Ackley, 33, shouted defiantly as he approached within a few feet of retreating officers during a Jan. 4 incident on the 200 block of Burns Road, a body-cam video shows.

"Put it down, we can talk about it," an officer is heard saying during the roughly 90-second encounter, which began when officers responded to 911 calls about a disturbance at Ackley's home.

"What if I don't want to talk about it?" responds Ackley, holding a knife in his upraised right hand as he walks down a long driveway and into the street.

"I don't want to shoot you," another officer says moments later.

"Please! We don't want to do this," adds a second policeman.

"Why don't you?" asks Ackley, his arms outstretched.

The confrontation ends abruptly with a police gunshot about 15 seconds later.

The Attorney General's Office released the video and other recordings Thursday in connection with an investigation into Ackley's fatal shooting by Millville Police Department Officer Timothy Rehman.

A state law requires an investigation into any death that occurs while a law enforcement officer is acting in an official capacity.

"The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time," the agency said.

The body-cam video shows Ackley falling to the snow-lined street after being shot, then struggling to sit up.

"S---, that was stupid," the Millville man says as officers direct him to stay down.

Police handcuff Ackley and begin to provide emergency medical treatment.

"Am I going to die?" Ackley asks them.

"Keep breathing man," an officer says as a siren can be heard in the distance.

Ackley was flown to a trauma center at Cooper University Hospital, Camden, where he was pronounced dead around 90 minutes after the 9:30 p.m. shooting.

A family member expressed concern over Ackley's behavior during two 911 calls released by the Attorney General's Office.

In the first call, the woman describes Ackley's behavior as "uncontrollable," but says he has no weapon and has made no threats.

In a second call minutes later, the woman reports Ackley has left the house and is carrying a kitchen knife.

"And he's been very threatening but no one in the house has been hurt yet," the caller says.

A second body-cam video shows an officer coming upon Ackley on the home's back deck, where the man is holding a knife in his upraised right hand.

"Hey buddy," the policeman says in a casual tone to Ackley.

"I'm not your buddy, guy," responds Ackley.

"Drop the knife, bud," the officer says, drawing an ominous reply from Ackley.

"Or you'll do what?"
