OCSO releases body cam footage of suspect pulling a gun on deputies

An Orange County man remained in the hospital Monday after deputies shot him following a Sunday night fight in which he was accused of attempting to kill his brother.

Avery Bobby Williams, 38, is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery on a pregnant person, robbery and grand theft, according to an arrest affidavit. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Williams may face more charges.

Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded Sunday to an apartment on the 5400 block of Spring Drive around 6:10 p.m. after a woman called in distress and screaming for help, the agency said.

The woman, who is pregnant, told deputies she went to the apartment to meet her ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old Narvell Danny Williams, who was hanging out with his brothers outside the building drinking alcohol, the report said.

One brother, Avery Williams, began flirting with the woman, which made her ex-boyfriend upset, the report said. The brothers started fighting until Avery Williams pulled out a gun from his waistband, pointed it at Narvell Williams and fired twice, the affidavit said.

The woman, who was filming the fight with her cellphone, told deputies her phone’s camera flash turned on, which alerted Avery Williams, according to the report. He tackled her to the ground, then grabbed her cellphone and punched her three times in the face, the affidavit said.

The woman said she kicked Avery Williams off of her and tried to run to her car, but then both brothers knocked her to the ground and snatched her keys and cellphone, the report said.

“While still on the ground before my items were snatched from my hands, Narvell and his brother were both punching and kicking me while saying, ‘Give me the [expletive] phone. I am tired of her [expletive],’” the woman told deputies, according to the affidavit.

When deputies arrived, the woman told them to “run after him, he has my phone,” the report said. Narvell Williams was detained and put in handcuffs but ran down the street when more gunshots were heard.

OCSO said deputies were pursuing Avery Williams on foot when he shot his gun at them. Deputies returned fire and hit Avery Williams, according to the agency.

First responders took Avery Williams to the hospital in critical condition.

Narvell Williams was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of aggravated battery on a pregnant person and robbery.

When talking to deputies, Narvell Williams denied having a fight with his brother or being shot at, according to the affidavit. However, deputies found two shell casings at the corner of Spring Hill Drive where the brothers had been fighting, the report said.

OCSO said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review.

Once that investigation is complete, the Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own internal investigation.

All the deputies involved in the shooting are on paid, temporary leave pending the FDLE investigation, the agency said.
