The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday evening released video of deputies in a shootout with a carjacking suspect stuck by gunfire Christmas Eve in Carmichael.

Kevin Slaughter, 44, of North Highlands, suffered critical injuries in the Dec. 24 shootout with the deputies. Slaughter was treated at a hospital and booked five days later at the Sacramento County Jail.

Slaughter remained in custody at the jail Thursday. He has been charged with three counts of attempt murder, two counts of carjacking, one count of attempted carjacking and one count assault with deadly weapon, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The sheriff’s office released an edited video that includes audio clips of 911 calls, dashboard camera video, body camera video and security camera video. The video includes narration from sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Rodney Grassmann providing details based on the ongoing shooting investigation so far.

About 6 p.m. Dec. 24, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a man who reported he was victim of a carjacking. He said he was leaving work in the 9800 block of Business Park Drive in Rancho Cordova, when a suspect pointed a gun at him and demanded the keys to his Ford Explorer.

“It appeared to be a weapon, he did cock it. Then he took my car,” the carjacking victim said during the 911 call.

The suspect then drove away in the Ford Explorer and left the victim in the parking lot. Rancho Cordova Police officers arrived at the scene and tracked the Ford Explorer using GPS to the intersection of Walnut and El Camino avenues in Carmichael.

Sheriff’s deputies went to an apartment complex in the 5100 block of El Camino Avenue and spotted the stolen Ford Explorer unoccupied in a parking lot.

As the deputies began to create a perimeter around the apartment complex, a man matching the suspect’s description “casually walks” across the street in front of a deputy’s patrol vehicle, Grassmann said.

Other deputies arrived at the perimeter as the suspect, later identified as Slaughter, ran west on El Camino before attempting three carjackings at the intersection of Walnut and El Camino, Grassmann said.

The video shows a patrol vehicle dashboard camera that captured the beginning of the shootout about 6:40 p.m. that night.

Grassmann said a deputy arrived at the intersection as Slaughter attempted the first carjacking and fired four gunshots at the deputy. The first carjacking attempt failed. Grassmann said Slaughter then ran to another car, but that carjacking attempt failed when the driver sped off.

The third carjacking attempt in the intersection was successful after Slaughter ordered the driver of a Toyota Prius to get out of the car at gunpoint, Grassmann said.

The video shows the driver and three passengers get out of the Prius moments before more gunshots are heard. They ran away, ducking their heads as the gunfire is heard. The video shows the Prius turn around the corner and drive away shortly before deputies followed in their vehicles.

One of the deputies is heard in the video telling dispatchers “He shot at me, I’m okay. I’m not hit.” The video shows the chase ended shortly after when the suspect drove into a nearby parking lot and got out of the Prius.

Grassmann said Slaughter tried to carjack another vehicle that was driving through the parking lot, but that attempt failed as deputies fired their guns at Slaughter. The sheriff’s spokesman said Slaughter was struck by one bullet in the torso.

The video shows the suspect fall to the ground as the Prius continued moving forward on its own at a slow speed before coming to a stop. One deputy could be heard yelling at the suspect “Put your hands up! Put your hands up!”

The video includes a photo of a stolen .40 caliber Glock 22 handgun recovered at the scene.

Grassmann said deputies provided immediate aid to Slaughter until medics from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District arrived and took him to a hospital. He said Slaughter was listed in critical but stable condition at the hospital before he was medically cleared and booked at the jail. No deputies or bystanders were injured.
