Okaloosa County Deputy Jacob Turner was in his cruiser when he noticed a 6-year-old boy in his pajamas, running barefoot through a busy four-lane highway at night.

As family frantically searched for the boy, who has autism, the deputy immediately ran into traffic to get the boy to safety.

He scooped him up in his arms, and kept him warm with his jacket until thankful family members arrived.

Family members told the deputy the boy slipped out of the home without anyone knowing.

The rescue happened on December 30, 2021, and Deputy Turner was honored this week with a Certificate of Commendation for his heroics.
