The Phoenix Police Department released edited snippets of body-camera footage depicting the fatal police shooting that killed a man on Feb. 7.

Sgt. Phil Krynsky, a department spokesperson, acts as the video’s narrator and says police received reports of a woman bleeding after a man stabbed her multiple times near 28th Avenue and Coronado Road about 1 p.m.

Krynsky said one of the responding officers found the man, later identified as 30-year-old Emilio Chamizo, walking toward an alley and ordered him to get on the ground. Krynsky said Chamizo ignored the command.

The officer got up closer in his car when Chamizo turned around and began walking toward him with a knife in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other. Krynsky said the officer ordered Chamizo to drop the knife, but Chamizo raised both hands without dropping either.

The video footage shows the officer ordering Chamizo to get his hands out of his pockets and to drop the knife a second before firing at Chamizo six times. Chamizo can be seen hobbling away for a few feet and, just before he collapses, another officer orders him to drop the knife and throw it away from him.

The officer repeats the orders for a little less than a minute before approaching and handcuffing Chamizo after finding him to be unresponsive. Krynsky said the officers provided medical aid until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived.

Chamizo was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Krynsky said the woman, who remains unidentified, was also treated at a hospital and is expected to survive. Krynsky said the officer who shot Chamizo has been with the department for six and a half years but did not name him.

A criminal and internal investigation into the shooting have begun as is standard protocol following police shootings.
