A man was listed in critical condition and a suspect was in custody after a shooting and high speed police chase in Flint early Wednesday.

The Flint Police Department responded to the 2000 block of South Averill Avenue around 12:40 a.m. to investigate reports of a shooting.

An unidentified man in his 40s went to Hurley Medical Center in a private vehicle for treatment of gunshot wounds before police arrived. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday.

Police later encountered the suspect, who led officers on a lengthy chase. Michigan State Police say he threw a handgun out the window along Pierson Road, which police were able to recover.

The chase went down Elms Road and ended when the suspect crashed off the dead end of Hammond Street north of Corunna Road in Flint.

Michigan State Police say the suspect was hospitalized Wednesday in serious condition from injuries sustained in the crash. The suspect was in police custody while awaiting arraignment.

Flint police have not released any information about a motive for the shooting.
