A man suspected in an attempted carjacking in Santa Clara was killed in a shootout with officers Wednesday evening in San Jose, police said.

The encounter unfolded at about 7:10 p.m. at West Hedding Street and Park Avenue.

According to the San Jose Police Department, the man who died tried to carjack a motorist at gunpoint in Santa Clara and was driving to San Jose when he got into a “serious” traffic collision at the intersection, which is near the border of the two cities.

Police spokesman Sgt. Christian Camarillo said the man shot at officers when they arrived at the site, and that multiple officers returned fire and hit the man at least once. He was later taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Several people in a vehicle that was hit by the suspect suffered minor to moderate injuries, police said. No officers were injured.

Police also said that the car the man was driving had been reported stolen, and that he was being surveilled by an SJPD helicopter as he traveled from East San Jose to Santa Clara and back to San Jose. The officers in the helicopter watched the attempted carjacking, Camarillo said.

He added that no police pursuit was ever ordered, though by the time the shootout unfolded, the helicopter was overhead and several police vehicles were quickly on scene.

Nearby residents reported hearing rapid-fire gunshots, which was affirmed in one neighbor’s video recordings that captured the sound of the shots and the sight of a car on fire. Officers could also be seen escorting one person to a police vehicle.

One resident told KTVU that he saw the car “burst into flames” after crashing, and another resident said the gunfire followed soon after.

Additional information about Wednesday’s shooting was not immediately released. The police department has tentatively scheduled a Friday news conference to release more details about the ensuing investigation.

West Hedding Street was cordoned off between Park Avenue and Chapman Street for several hours.

The shooting is the first by San Jose police officers this year. Last year, officers were involved in two on-duty shootings, both of which were fatal and controversial.
