Video: Monroe Police release more information on what led up to fatal officer involved shooting
Monroe Police have released more information on a fatal officer-involved shooting last Friday.
Dustin Booth, 35, was shot the night of Feb. 11. A car he was a passenger in was pulled over around 10:45 p.m. on New Garver Road near SR 63. Booth then exited the vehicle and did not comply with any of the officers' commands. He then reportedly pulled a gun from his waistband, and that's when police shot him.
On Thursday, Monroe Police released new information, helping fill in the gaps on what led up to the shooting.
According to the department, Booth's wife called 911 earlier that day, around 2 p.m., to tell them she believed Booth was experiencing a mental health crisis and that he was danger to himself and others.
As officers responded to Booth's neighborhood, they saw him driving toward his home. Officers attempted to pull him over, but Booth continued to his home, where he went inside, ignoring the officers.
Over the next few hours, officers tried several ways to contact Booth. Officers say he was observed to have a handgun inside the home and appeared very agitated. They also believed he had access to other weapons.
Negotiators from the West Chester/Monroe Tactical Response Team and the Crisis Response Team from Butler Behavioral Health Services were called to scene in attempt to get Booth to surrender and be taken to the hospital for mental health treatment. But later, with no progress made, officers say they moved away from the home to help calm the situation while still keeping an eye on Booth.
Later, Booth left his home and was picked up by the car that was later pulled over. Police say they believed Booth was still a danger, so they followed the car and coordinated a traffic stop in order to take Booth to the hospital.
After the car stopped, Booth left the vehicle and walked toward SR 63 with his hands up, ignoring the officers' commands to stop while the driver of the vehicle yelled to officers several times: "Stop him! He has a gun!"
Police released a K9 in an effort to stop Booth, but the K9 was unsuccessful. Officers then tried to take him into custody, but that's when, according to police, he dropped his hands and pulled a gun from his waistband. Officers fired, hitting him multiple times.
Booth was taken to Atrium Medical Center where he died.
The department placed several officers involved on administrative leave.
