A 28-year-old man allegedly armed with a knife and threatening family members was fatally shot by police in Pacoima before sunrise Tuesday, authorities said.

Police were called to the 12900 block of Desmond Street, near the 118 Freeway, at about 2:15 a.m. regarding an assault with a deadly weapon suspect armed with a knife, according to Officer Lizeth Lomeli of the Los Angeles Police Department.

"The radio call indicated a family member was at the house and armed with a knife attempting to hit people and was possibly under the influence of narcotics," an LAPD statement said.

"Additional family members were locked in their rooms," police said, explaining that officers were able to evacuate family members when they arrived, but the suspect of the radio call refused to exit the home.

Around 3:30 a.m., police said the man exited the house out of a side window of the house armed while armed with a knife.

"An officer fired a foam projectile from a 40mm less lethal launcher at the suspect. The suspect continued to charge toward officers standing near a
police vehicle, at which time, simultaneously, a bean bag round was fired, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," the police statement continued.

The wounded man, later identified as Jonathan Murillo-Nix of Pacoima, Calif. was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 4 a.m.
