Atlanta officer arrest suspect after assaulting pregnant woman

On March 12th, 2022, Zone 1 Officers were flagged down near the location of Ellsworth Industrial Blvd. Officers were met by a pregnant female who stated she was just assaulted by her significant other. The victim sustained visible injuries to her head, neck, arms, and legs but was alert, conscious, and breathing.

Preliminary investigation indicates APD units were called out twice to the victim’s residence in reference to a physical altercation with her significant other earlier in the day, however, the suspect fled the scene both times before units arrived. On the current call, the victim stated the suspect struck her repeatedly with a firearm and was still armed and somewhere on the premises. While canvassing the location, officers located the suspect attempting to flee the parking deck in a vehicle.

Officers confronted the suspect and gave loud verbal commands to show his hands and exit the vehicle. After a brief resistance, the suspect was safely taken into custody. The suspect was identified as Willie Lewis. It was also discovered that Mr. Lewis had two additional active warrants out of the City of Atlanta for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Cruelty to Children. Officers also recovered a firearm from Lewis’s vehicle. Lewis was transported to Fulton County Jail.

We want to take this time to applaud the work of the Zone 1 officers for being responsive, diligent, and alert. Because of their actions, they were able to quickly identify and safely arrest this violent suspect without incident. This was a potentially volatile situation that could have ended much differently. We are proud of the work our officers do daily to keep our citizens and city safe.
