Major Traffic Stops Part of More Than 1,000 Service Calls, Felon Arrests

A major traffic enforcement operation for the month of April by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) got off to a busy start this past weekend. The Sheriff’s 9-1-1 Dispatch Center handled more than 1,080 calls for service since Friday and deputies conducted major traffic stops as part of the operation.

April marks the beginning of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The FCSO is partnering with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to promote the importance of avoiding distracted driving. The Put It Down: Focus On Driving campaign supports the Wireless Communications While Driving Law, which requires drivers to put their phones down to focus on driving while in school or work zones. Community Policing Division members will be enforcing this campaign for the entire month of April.

Several major arrests took place that began as traffic stops this past weekend. It all kicked off in the early hours of Saturday morning when deputies conducted a traffic stop at the RaceTrac on Palm Coast Parkway for a traffic violation. The driver, identified as 46-year-old James Miller, was arrested after deputies smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a probable cause search, deputies recovered a firearm, 28.16g of cocaine, four pills believed to be Ecstasy and 12 pill bottles of various medications.

Miller is facing charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Trafficking in Cocaine and Possession of MDMA. He was released on a $35,000 bond.

A few hours later, deputies responded to a stolen vehicle alert in the area of Belle Terre Parkway and Cypress Point Drive. A highrisk traffic stop was conducted on a white Audi M4 and the driver, 23-year-old Riggin Temple, was arrested after deputies discovered he was in possession of two stolen tags and a stolen vehicle from Delray Beach, Florida. Temple is facing charges of Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Petit Theft and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and is being held at the Green Roof Inn on a $5,000 bond.

In the early morning hours Monday, deputies conducted a traffic stop in the area of Belle Terre Parkway and Cypress Point Parkway after observing a white light emitting from the rear part of a vehicle. While deputies were speaking with 36-year-old Jason Dixon, they smelled a strong odor of an air freshener being sprayed and observe what was believed to be a marijuana cigarette. A search was conducted and deputies recovered 6g of crack-cocaine, 5.6g of MDMA, 18 pills, two Hydrocodone pills and 3g of marijuana. Following the search, Dixon resisted arrest and was found to be on Federal Probation for a weapons offense. He now faces charges for Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Sell, Possession of MDMA, Possession of Marijuana 20g or More, Resisting Officer without Violence, Possession of Hydrocodone and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was released from the Green Roof Inn on an $11,500 bond.

“This is certainly one way to kick off a traffic operation,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “These incidents were discovered by deputies who were proactively policing our roadways in an effort to make our roadways safer. Deputies did a phenomenal job recovering stolen property, seizing poison, and apprehending career felons and drug dealers. I’m hopeful the criminal justice system keep these dirtbags behind bars where they belong. Here’s another reminder to poison peddlers that we do not tolerate drugs in Flagler County and if you try to bring illegal narcotics into our county, we will do everything in our power to provide you a room at the Green Roof Inn!”
