Springfield police shoot man in MGM Casino parking garage after he wounds officer with flare gun

A Springfield police officer and a suspect were both taken to Baystate Medical Center following an incident in downtown Springfield early Thursday morning.

Massachusetts State Police Spokesman Dave Procopio told 22News, shortly after midnight troopers along with Springfield police officers searched the area outside the MGM casino for a man who was denied entry to the casino because security found spent shell casings in his backpack.

Officers found the 24-year-old Springfield man (Anthony Nguyen) in an alley adjacent to the courthouse on State Street. The suspect fired at least one round from a flare gun that struck a Springfield officer, causing a hand injury. The suspect took off toward the MGM parking garage and fired two more shots at a trooper who was able to take cover.

Several Springfield officers and MSP patrols were called to the MGM parking garage area. As police were engaging with the armed suspect, the suspect was shot by an officer or officers.

The suspect was taken to Baystate Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries. The Springfield officer is was treated for injuries and released. The identities of the injured officer and the suspect have not been revealed at this time.

“I’m thankful our officer is going to be okay and no other officers or civilians were harmed during this dangerous encounter. I visited with the injured officer this morning and spoke with Mayor Sarno. The Mayor wishes a speedy recovery for the injured officer and has everyone involved in his thoughts.
Our Detective Bureau is reviewing body-camera footage and gathering numerous additional video from the area for their investigation, which when complete will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office.”

“You have individuals who want to perpetuate negativity on the streets, whether its in Springfield or Massachusetts or the country, and its the men women in blue who are out there keeping us safe and sound,” said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno.

Body camera footage of the incident is being reviewed to determine if the use of force was justified by the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office.

22News crews in the areas just after midnight saw the entrance to the MGM parking garage blocked-off by police, and portions of State Street were inaccessible to traffic. As of 5:30 a.m., the Springfield Police Forensic Investigation truck was positioned outside the garage entrance. Crime scene tape was also set-up nearby.

The Springfield Police Department investigating the shooting and the Gaming Enforcement Unit is assisting.
