LASD release body cam footage of a shooting when suspect points gun at deputy at a motel

On September 30, 2021, at approximately 2:06 AM, two deputies assigned to the South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station drove their patrol vehicle into the parking lot of a motel in the 8400 block of South Figueroa Street in the city of Los Angeles. The deputies observed Shane Whelchel, a 43-year-old man, standing near the motel office window. Whelchel looked in their direction, clutched his front waistband area and quickly ran up the staircase to the second floor of the motel.

Believing Whelchel may be armed with a handgun, the deputies exited their patrol vehicle. The driver deputy followed Whelchel to the second floor corridor and gave him verbal commands to stop and show his hands.

Whelchel ignored him, continued to runaway from him and unsuccessfully attempted to force entry into a motel room. From the parking lot below, the passenger deputy also observed Whelchel run to the west end of the second floor corridor and attempt to force entry into a motel room.

Whelchel retrieved a handgun from his waistband area, pointed the handgun at the passenger deputy in the parking lot, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Whelchel then threw his handgun onto the parking lot from the second floor.

Whelchel sustained one gunshot wound to his left leg. He was immediately detained. Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics responded and provided medical aid. Whelchel was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

He was subsequently cleared for booking.

Neither deputy nor any other persons were injured during the incident.
A loaded Ruger 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
