Bodycam Shows Pair Pulled From Caravan Wreckage Moments Before Massive Explosion

Heart-stopping footage has revealed the moment a driver and his passenger were hauled from their vehicle after a caravan crash on WA’s South Western Highway.

The rescue of the pair, both believed to be in their 80s, was captured on a police officer’s bodycam just 90 seconds before the wreck exploded on the highway near Harvey on the morning of March 12.

“Is there anyone in the car?,” Constable Reece Josemans is heard calling as he runs towards the crash around 10.30am.

“There’s two people in the car!,” an onlooker calls back frantically.

Josemans is seen ripping a panel of shattered glass off of the vehicle, with flames already spreading on the exterior.

“Undo your seatbelt. We’re going to rip you out!,” Josemans yells to the passengers.

“Go, go, go, go, go!”

Later Josemans recalled the incident for 7NEWS.

“At that point, I didn’t know how they were going to come out, but I knew I had to find a way,” he said.

“The car had 125 litres of petrol on it. Two gas bottles on the caravan,” WA Police Sergeant Wayne Byram said.

Officers blasted the car with fire extinguishers as the rescue operation unfolded.

“Within 90 seconds of getting everyone back, the fuel tank did go up, and it just shook the ground.”

The blast reportedly melted everything within the vicinity, including the bitumen.

“It is believed a vehicle towing a caravan has failed to negotiate a bend and crashed,” WA Police told 7NEWS.com.au.

The male driver received facial burns and was flown to Fiona Stanley Hospital.

The female passenger received minor injuries and was transported to Harvey Hospital.

“If not for the actions of the officers that attended directly, then we would potentially be dealing with a double-fatal on the South Western Highway,”

“He goes, ‘oh you saved my life’, to me that’s everything. Job done,” Josemans said.

Police say that the near miss is a warning to those taking to the roads during the Easter break.
