Leavenworth police release body camera video from 2017 deadly officer involved shooting

The public release of police body camera footage in the manslaughter case of a former Leavenworth, Kansas, officer has been delayed.

The release of the Matthew Harrington bodycam video is delayed indefinitely after a motion was filed in court to delay the release.

A mistrial was declared Wednesday for Harrington. The former police officer is charged with involuntary manslaughter in a 2017 shooting. A hung jury could not reach either a guilty or not guilty verdict for the case.

Thursday morning, The Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens announced that he would release a 48-second video clip of the former officer's body camera.

Kitchens said the video was to be released out of public interest. The Leavenworth Police Department launched a Professional Standards Investigation that reviewed the footage shortly after the shooting in 2017.

"The investigation was concluded, and I elected to terminate Officer Harrington, citing that his use of lethal force was not reasonable," Kitchens said.

There is a hearing scheduled for tomorrow morning with a judge at 8:30 to review the delay of the footage's release.

Complete copies of Harrington's dashcam video or body camera video can be acquired with a Kansas Open Record Act request. The Leavenworth police chief says copies may not be available until early next week, depending on the number of requests.
