Two officers with the Franklin Police Department were injured Sunday after a fleeing suspect drug them with his car, running one of the officers over.

According to the FPD, officer Dustyn Stevens pulled over 26-year-old Roy Nicholson, of Columbia, at 10:20 a.m. on Interstate 65 North between Murfreesboro Road and McEwen Drive for a traffic violation.

Upon approaching Nicholson’s vehicle, Stevens asked Nicholson to step out of his car after seeing a gun in the vehicle and smelling marijuana. Once outside of the car, Nicholson began actively resisting the officer.

Dash cam footage provided by the FPD showed Nicholson break away from the officer, at which time FPD officer Matt Lamarr pulled up to assist Stevens. Nicholson got back into his car after a brief struggle, where the firearm was still present, then put the car into gear and dragged Stevens and Lamarr briefly down the interstate. Stevens was run over during the getaway.

Citizens who saw the ordeal followed the suspect’s vehicle, providing updated location information that helped additional responding officers locate and take Nicholson into custody outside of a Franklin Walmart immediately following the assault.

Stevens was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Lamarr’s injuries appeared to be superficial, not requiring immediate medical treatment.

Nicholson was charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a first responder and felony evading. He was freed on a $40,000 bond set by the magistrate and is due in court at 1 p.m. June 9. Additional charges are expected in this case, according to the FPD.

Lamarr is a 16-year FPD veteran, while Stevens is in his fourth year on the force.
