On Saturday, April 23, 2022, Atlanta PD’s Air Unit, Phoenix 1, responded to the area of I-20 WB to assist Georgia State Patrol (GSP) in their pursuit of a black Chevrolet Camaro. The vehicle eventually wrecked, and the two occupants fled on foot with State Troopers in pursuit. Utilizing technological tools, and thermal imaging, the air unit team kept a watchful eye on the fleeing suspects and was able to provide real-time directions and suspect updates to the Troopers on the ground.

The suspect driver continued to flee until he stumbled upon a homeless encampment and cleverly decided to enter an occupied tent and take up temporary residence. Phoenix technology guided the Troopers to the tent, and the suspect was taken into custody. The vehicle was found to be stolen from Dekalb County. Over a pound of marijuana and a firearm were recovered.

The Atlanta Police Department recognizes our partners in the Georgia State Patrol for their tireless efforts to make Georgia safer. We want to also recognize the value of the ability to communicate between agencies and coordinate the response that allowed Phoenix 1 to aid in this arrest. APD will continue to use all available resources to reduce crime and stop lawbreakers.
