Queensland police dogs track man through swamp at night after he allegedly fled serious crash scene

Australian police have released video of a frantic night-time dog squad pursuit of a man who allegedly fled the scene of a severe accident and hid in a muddy swamp.

The handheld footage showed police dogs chasing a man through dense bush and marshes after a four-car collision on the M1 near Dreamworld on the Gold Coast on Thursday night.

According to police, two people from a white Freelander Landrover station wagon fled the scene of the Pacific Motorway crash on foot after several people were trapped in the accident, and an infant had to be assessed.

The female occupant of the wagon surrendered, but her companion allegedly bolted into swamp land off Heathwood Drive and Reserve Road, Coomera swam across Yaun Creek.

Yaun Creek feeds into the Coomera River, which is infested with bull sharks.

The alleged escapee was chased by police dogs Okka and RJ and their handlers, supported by a police helicopter.

The footage shows the moment the alleged escapee was found by dogs.

‘This is the police dog squad!’ an officer yells.

‘Show me your hands now, show me your hands now!’

The Gold Coast man and his companion are now in custody, as police appealed for witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage of the accident, to contact them.

The video shows a tall man in with mud on his back and chest being led away in handcuffs by three officers and placed in a police vehicle.

The video also shows a police dog being washed down after the chase and enthusiastically being told, ‘good boy!’

‘Around 5.30pm four vehicles collided on the Coomera Bridge overpass, just past the Oxenford off-ramp, northbound on the Pacific Motorway/M1,’ a police statement said.

‘Two of the occupants of a 2010 white Freelander Landrover station wagon involved in the crash fled the scene and a lengthy foot pursuit occurred with a 33-year-old Gold Coast woman taken into custody near the crash site at Reserve Road by Police Dog Okka and his handler.

‘A 34-year-old Gold Coast man did not surrender, swimming across Yaun Creek, Coomera, tracked by Police Dogs Okka and RJ and their handlers with the assistance of Polair1.

‘The man secreted himself in mud and was apprehended a short time later by the police dogs in swamp land off Heathwood Drive and Reserve Road.’
