12 Bar Blues Guitar Lesson for Beginners
Most Blues songs are based from a twelve-bar format, and becoming familiar with a twelve-bar shuffle rhythm is essential for any Blues guitarist. For beginners, the first step is learn how to play a blues shuffle rhythm and then to learn what a 12 bar Blues is.
How to Play Blues Shuffle Rhythm on Guitar
A blues shuffle rhythm progression involves strumming two adjacent strings, with the lower string providing a steady bass line while the higher string is periodically ‘tapped’ to a higher fret.
The letter name of each shuffle rhythm is determined by its bass note. In this guitar lesson we'll learn how to play a blues shuffle rhythm in 'A' (‘A’ = open fifth string).
What is a 12-Bar Blues Progression?
A 12-Bar Blues progression consists of twelve sections or bars. In this Blues rhythm guitar lesson for beginners, each bar consists of eight beats (‘1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4'), which equates to two ‘taps’ (third finger to fourth fret) each bar.
Blues Shuffle Rhythm for Beginners
This Blues rhythm guitar lesson for beginners will show how to play an easy 12-bar shuffle rhythm progression in 'A'. To learn to play a blues shuffle in 'A' is easy because all three shuffle rhythm patterns ('A', 'D', 'E') are open shuffle rhythms. An open shuffle rhythm on guitar is easy to play because an open shuffle rhythm features open strings which do not need to be fretted.
The first four bars are in ‘A’, consisting of 32 total beats or eight total ‘taps’ of the third finger. Strum just the fourth and fifth strings and maintain a consistent tempo by not adding or deleting from the 32-beat count.
How to Play Blues Turnaround on Guitar
A turnaround is a standard technique used in Blues that creates tension at the end of one verse in order to ‘lead-in’ to another verse. This Blues rhythm guitar lesson for beginners shows how to play a standard blues turnaround on guitar in the Key of 'A' Blues.
Bar 5 shifts to a ‘D’ shuffle. Focus on clarity by strumming just the third and fourth strings. Bars 7-8 return back to the ‘A’ shuffle. Try playing Bars 1-8 together before moving on to Bars 9-12.
Bar 9 features a switch to an ‘E’ shuffle played for just one bar (two ‘taps’).
‘leaps over’ two strings to play a ‘D’ shuffle, then shifts down to ‘A’ for Bar 11. Focus on clarity by playing just two strings for each bar, sounding the proper bass notes clearly for each shuffle.
Ending
At the end of the twelfth bar of Verse 2, substitute the Ending in place of the turnaround used in Verse 1. A suggested count for Bars 11-12 of Verse 2 is shown below the above T ab, with the x’s representing the silent or muted third and fourth beats of the bar. Note how both the Turnaround and Ending sections each begin with a solid ‘1 - 2' count of the ‘A’ shuffle. Getting all five strings of the ‘A7' chord to ring clearly may initially be a challenge to complete the 12 bar Blues progression.
