We did it AGAIN! Violet the Nigerian Dwarf Doe Comes to the GWP.
Our dairy goat enterprise continues to expand as Violet the Nigerian Dwarf doe comes home to our farm! We are excited to add Violet to our herd, but she has a secret – she’s pregnant! Violet is due to kid May 2021 and if the babies are anything like their mom they will be wonderful additions to the GWP Homestead.

The story of how Violet came to us is actually pretty funny. We have to travel about an hour to get dairy goat feed because none of our local farm stores carry feed made for lactating dairy goats. On a recent trip to the Marshall County Co-op in Benton, KY Megan struck up a conversation with a young lady behind the counter about dairy goats. She mentioned she had a few bred does that she was interested in selling and, of course, Megan’s eyes got wide and the wheels in her mind began to turn. A week later we were heading back to Benton to pick up Violet. Violet’s temperament is wonderful and our kids (human kids Keeton and Riley that is) have already fallen in love with her. This is also Violet’s fourth kidding; she’s had twins twice and triplets once, all healthy and easy births.
Why dairy goats? After watching so many homesteads with dairy goats Megan felt like it was something she wanted to take on. One of our goals with our farm is to grow as much of our food as possible and goat milk is a wonderful source of dairy. We’ll be able to use the raw milk for cheeses, yogurt, soaps, and lotion, as well as a host of other things. Why Nigerian Dwarfs specifically? Nigerian Dwarf milk has a high butter fat content, which means a cream line should be present and we can make butter. Nigerian Dwarfs are also small so they’ll be easier for Megan to milk and are less intimidating to our young children.
Be sure you’re subscribed to our channel so you stay up to date on the goings-on around the farm. As you can tell there’s never a dull moment! Thanks for watching, everyone!
