DONNER PASS

Starting off in Reno
I aim the kenworth west
Ignore the Rpm gauge cause
My ears know which gears best

Rising elevation
The turbo compensates
Heart begins to beat real fast
blowing out my straights

Pupils dilated now
Palms begin to sweat
Don't you miss a gear or
for that you will regret

Engine temp is rising
Turbos right in line
Feedback from the dashboard
Says the caterpillars fine

Steady on the pedals now
Your nearly to the top
But it’s only halfway over
on the other side you drop

The air is very thin up here
breath all that you can get
If you thought uphill was bad
you aint seen nothing yet

Pull over to the side
get out your craftsman wrench
crawl under and adjust your brakes
or wind up in the trench

Take a couple minutes
and calm your jagged nerves
downhill is where you're gonna find
the switchbacks and the curves

Remember this old saying
don't feel like a dunce
too slow downhill you can do often
but only too fast once

Where the runaway truck lanes are
you make a mental note
if you need one and you miss it

Take off nice and easy
Keep the gear in low
Make sure the jakes on full
Now down this hill we go

You’re placing all your trust
In air and engine retarder
This job is tough none would deny
But this don't get no harder

Gently, slowly, we descend
We make it to the bottom
Reno still has summer
while this side looks like autumn

I stop in Sacramento
I pull the seat clenched in my ass
Once more my Kenworth's done her job
