While conceived for an ensemble of four euphoniums and one tuba, this setting may be played in a variety of configurations for multiple instruments. Below is the suggested instrumentation, along with optional substitutions:
Euphonium 1 T.C. or B.C. (opt. Horn in F or Eb, Trombone, or Baritone)
Euphonium 2 T.C. or B.C. (opt. Horn in F or Eb, Trombone or Baritone)
Euphonium 3 T.C. or B.C. (opt. Trombone or Baritone)
Euphonium 4 T.C. or B.C. (opt. Trombone or Baritone)
Tuba B.C. or in Eb or Bb (opt. Bass Trombone)
Performance Notes:
The stories of each of the United States Armed Forces songs are as varied as the histories of the services themselves, and include tunes written by John Philip Sousa and Frenchman, Jacques Offenbach. This medley includes renditions presented in the order of the founding of each of the services.
United States Army, founded on June 14, 1775
“The Army Goes Rolling Along,” music by John Philip Sousa, and words by Harold W. Atberg
United States Navy, founded October 13, 1775
“Anchors Aweigh,” music by Charles Zimmerman, words by John Hagen
(original words by Alfred H. Miles, with added verse by George D. Lottman)
United States Marines, founded November 10, 1775
“Marines’ Hymn,” music by Jacques Offenbach, author of words unknown
United States Coast Guard, founded August 4, 1790
“Semper Paratus” (“Always Ready”), music by Francis Saltus Van Boskerck, words by Homer Smith and Walton Butterfield
United States Air Force, founded September 18, 1947
“The U.S. Air Force,” music and words by Robert MacArthur Crawford
It should be noted there is currently a sixth branch to the United States Armed Forces. It would be included here, however at this time, there is no song associated with the service
