Kids, how much truth is too much? Why don't we talk to our kids anymore?

Several of my parent friends have different styles of parenting. Some applaud my open and honest relationship with my kid, while some are horrified by it and wonder how I can let them be aware of what I went through at their age. They don't believe you should be open with kids about trauma that happened in the past that could explain why we act like we do now with our children.
I believe the more your kids know about why you act a certain way, especially when your kid are certain ages, the better of a relationship you can have with them and possibly help them steer clear of the same traumas.
