Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms very similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. It is a rare disease caused by a monkeypox virus infection. The Orthopoxvirus genus, which belongs to the Poxviridae family, is responsible for the monkeypox virus. Variola virus (which causes smallpox), vaccinia virus (which is used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus are all members of the Orthopoxvirus genus.
