We Planted an Orchard! (And a Couple More Shade Trees)

Planting an orchard at our farm was in our plans but we expected it would be several more months before it happened. However, we wanted to add two more shade trees near the house to go along with the oak that we transplanted from Ragon’s family farm (that video is linked below if you haven’t seen it), and while we were at the nursery we just couldn’t help but get a few fruit varieties. Ragon’s family had fruit trees and blueberry bushes growing up and a lot of memories were made in that small orchard. We are excited to make memories with our kids in ours.

We purchased our plants from Holly Nursery in Calvert City, KY. The folks at Holly Nursery are extremely nice and incredibly knowledgeable; I ought to know, I’m related to them! Please consider them if you are in the market for trees, shrubs, flowers – anything you might need, they have it.

For the shade trees we opted to plant a red maple in the front yard and a pecan tree in our pasture. Both of these will make great shade in time. Kenny also set us up with two apple trees (an Ein Shemer and a Honeycrisp), a Kieffer pear tree, and three blueberry bushes (Premier and Tifblue varieties, two of one and one of the other and I’m not sure which is which). Megan bought a Reka blueberry bush last spring and we moved it from the front yard to the back where it will get more sunlight and have a better chance of pollinating with the new bushes.
