Virtual Tour of Omaere Enthnobotanical Park in the Ecuadorian Amazon

The name "Omaere," from the language of the Woarani people, means "jungle nature." The Park was founded in 1993 by an indigenous Shuar, and two French women. They formed the Omaere Foundation, bought a 15 hectare plot on the outskirts of the city of Puyo and reforested the park with the most useful and important plants of the indigenous cultures of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Today, it is nearly fully restored. There are Shuar and Waorani guides available at the park for Spanish speakers, but Chris (obviously) can accommodate English speakers.
The tour that we took with Chris Canaday (Conservation Biologist and EcoSan Promoter, Coordinator of Guiding at the Omaere Ethnobotanical Park) , husband of park founder Teresa Shiki, was incredibly informative, and the work that they are doing is vital.
The Shuar are very secretive about their knowledge of the plants of the Amazon, which is unparalleled. Chris, being married to a Shuar-healer, has rare access to this priceless trove of knowledge, which he shared with us with unguarded generosity.
Chris showed us natural contraceptives, edibles, cancer cures, snakebite treatments, anti-inflammatories, and more, complete with Shuar names and even some demonstrations. There are even palms at the park that walk around the forest in search of better light. And of course, copal, ayahuasca, guayusa, and other ceremonial plants. Chris even shared some in-depth descriptions of some of the Shuar techniques of shamanism.
From Parque Omeare's Facebook page:
"On a typical tour, we teach how the Shuar and the Waorani coexist with the Amazonian nature. In addition, you can enjoy the tranquility of nature, just a few minutes from the city of Puyo. Every year, thousands of people from Ecuador and from all over the world visit us.
