Your Neighborhood with Kimo Quance (EPISODE 10: BLOSSOM VALLEY)

Located just east of El Cajon, Blossom Valley is a small, rural community with a ranch-like feel. About 25 miles outside of San Diego, the area offers big homes, big lots, and some even bigger views. Seems like it would have taken an army to establish this community, but did you know it actually just took one 19 year old boy, one friend, and one mule to clear over 100 acres in 1912.
Teenager Elmer G. Blossom started developing the land on the lower end of the valley. It was converted into a very productive ranch that grew and harvested a variety of fruits and vegetables.
BLOSSOM VALLEY TODAY
The rural, ranch style feel has attracted many to become residents of the unincorporated community. The multi acre lots give homeowners the imaginative freedom to design not only their dream homes from the ground up, but give plenty of yard space for future construction of granny flats, pools, shops and garages, ports, large animal pens, and SO MUCH MORE!
LAKES NEARBY
Just west of Blossom Valley you can find Lake Jennings. So whether you want to cast a couple lines, go for a paddle, or do a little hiking the lake is a great place to go in just a couple of minutes. To the west, you have El Capitan Reservoir. A great place for boat lovers to cruise on the water, go for a morning or afternoon wakeboard/wakesurf session, or to try your luck with some fish. On shore there are places available to barbecue and set up your fixins on a picnic table or two. Make sure to include your dogs, but remember to keep them on a leash at all times.
HIKING
The rural geography of Blossom Valley makes for great trails to hike and enjoy the views of the east. Just northeast of the community is El Cajon Mountain. More commonly known as El Capitan or El Cap, which are also neighbors within the reservoir. With the summit at 3648 feet, it offers amazing 360 degree views. The surrounding areas below are mostly private property and land belonging to the indian reservations but also included in the Cleveland National Forest.
If you are looking for a bit of a milder climate hike, you could go just west of El Cap to Silverdome. The peak reaches 2375 feet, and although it is 1000 feet shorter, it still offers wonderful views of its own.
VIEJAS CASINO
With Blossom Valley located deep in the east, there are some alternative ideas to visit despite a trek to the beach that may seem daunting. There is plenty to do just a little furhter east. Take a trip up to Mt. Laguna after a fresh snowstorm, or Julian to enjoy the green landscape and some fresh pie. Or instead just head 15 min, that’s right only 15 minutes to enjoy Viejas Resort and Casino in Alpine.
The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians purchased the reservation 1932, and in 1991 opened its doors for all to enjoy their in house slots and bingo. After many renovations and remodels, the casino now spans over 133,000 square feet, has 237 available rooms, and for those who don’t gamble, the area includes a major outlet mall, restaurants, and bowling alley for all to enjoy.
The Viejas Resort also offers plenty of space for meetings and other hostings, a small skating and ice rink, and tons of live music with their very own concert series that they hold annually.
So head east on the 8, and spend a day playing your lucky numbers, doing some shopping, and enjoy the great view of the mountains that surround the Viejas reservation.
