This is a brief history of the man that Whidbey Island is named after.

Back in 1792 a naval officer who was part of Captain Vancouver's discovery trip around the waters of current Washington State got an island named after him after they sailed around it. Captain Vancouver was basically naming everything about his friends including Peter Puget who got Puget Sound, that guy he was a lieutenant. Joseph Whidbey sailed through deception pass which originally was believed to be a bay and he proved that it was an island and not a bay and that is why Whidbey Island is named after him.
