Welcome to Ricky's Historical Tidbits this is a brief history of the cross on Whidbey Island.

Back in 1840 on may 26th Catholic missionary Francis Blanchet was invited to would be island by Chief Tslalakum hopefully I said that right. He held a service and noticed that many of the indians sang hymns in the Chinook jargon, other tribes came during the service to attend. These tribes had been in battles and wars between each other and at the end of the service a peace pipe was passed around and as this was happening a group of indians showed up dragging a 24 foot long cross and put it in the ground near the priest. It stayed there until the early 1900s when a settler decided it would make a nice fence. The cross has been reassembled and is on display outside the museum in Coupeville on Whidbey Island.
