Performance Notes:

First published in 1899 in a collection called “Old Plantation Hymns,” the origin of this music is almost certainly from African-American slaves in the American South. Its plaintiff lyrics and heartfelt melody have made it one of the most sung songs during Holy Week (the days leading up to Easter Sunday).
The arrangement is a feature for solo flugelhorn in a flugelhorn ensemble. Part 5 may also be substituted with a Horn in F or E-flat, however all five instruments matching (all flugelhorns, all cornets, all trumpets) is the ideal. instrumentation While the like instruments are an advantage as it relates to blending of chords, it can be a disadvantage for the melody being heard clearly. The accompaniment, mostly a dense chordal pad, should be as dark in timbre as possible, and also underneath the soloist (or whomever is carrying the melody at a given time). The solo part can be livelier in timbre, and while the accompanying parts should mostly be senza vibrato, the soloist should sing expressively. There is a fair bit of dissonance, which is appropriate given the subject. Players should neither accentuate nor hide that dissonance, but just allow it to be. Balance between the accompanying players is paramount and should be perhaps as even as an organ.
