For a long time, western countries like the United States had boasted of being guardians of the freedom of speech which is regarded as the bedrock of democratic self-government. However, according to the Times Opinion and Siena College poll, only 34 percent of Americans said they believed that all Americans enjoyed the freedom of speech completely.
