Ben Harris-Quinney: Put the People Back in Charge of Politics

Ben Harris-Quinney talks about reforming British democracy to put the people back in charge of politics. Food security is a problem facing the world right now, which is why the think tank chairman is also calling for Britain’s farming and fishing industries to be reinvigorated. He also goes into the origins of The Bow Group, its philosophy, and its increasing relevance in filling the small-c conservative policy vacuum created by the ever-leftward leaning Conservative & Unionist Party.

Harris-Quinney says: “We’ve got a situation in the country as a whole where two out of the four last prime ministers weren’t duly elected. We’ve got a situation where two out of the last four Conservative prime ministers were members of the same 12-man dining club at university. There’s a sense that, like with the Brexit vote, people wanted things done differently and they wanted to be in charge of that process. There are a lot of aspects of British democracy that I think are not fit for purpose in a modern democracy. The antidote to almost all of those things is putting people back in charge. Having the open primaries to select the candidates, having the votes of the membership, rather than a few people in parliament. These things need to be put in place and codified so that we can ensure that it’s not the men in grey suits making the decisions, but it’s the people. Like free speech, those principles are so core and fundamental.”
