The most significant founders of geology believed that many of Earth's features could only be explained through catastrophic events.

However, by the time geology was established as an academic discipline in the late 19th century, the uniformitarian interpretation of Earth's history became the most accepted theory in geology.

The problem with this view is that it has become dogmatic, discarding considerable evidence showing that some of Earth's features necessarily imply catastrophic rates of change.

Randall Carlson believes this dogmatism also shines some light on the centuries-long controversy between the fundamentalist religious and scientific worldviews.
