Redenção is a small city in the State of Ceara, the current name Redenção, made official in 1889, refers to the fact that the city has entered history as the first in Brazil to totally free its slaves. This occurred by declaration, on January 1, 1883, resulting from the suggestion of Deocleciano Ribeiro de Menezes. The “liberators”, important abolitionists, came in entourage to honor the solemnity of the event, through the Railroad of Baturité. The current city of Redenção, was known as Acarape and belonged to the province of Baturité, in 1823. Its first inhabitants were the Tapuia Indians, who came from Jaguaribe to inhabit the banks of the Pacoti River.
