There’s a peculiar verse in the Bible that seems to go against the concept of free will.
Exodus 9:12
“the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart…”.
Now we all have our thoughts on this verse, but let’s look at it another way, through the lens of a metaphor.
Let’s say God is the sun.
And Pharaoh is a leaf that is not connected to the vine.
And Moses is a leaf connected to the vine.
Now Keep in mind the verse where Jesus says, “I am the vine, you are the branches.”
We know the sun is the same today, forever and always, but it will have a drastically different affect on the leaf that is connected to the vine compared to the one that is not.
The sun causes the vine leaf to flourish and have life in itself,
While on the other hand, it causes the unattached leaf to harden.
To shrivel up and eventually die.
Same sun.
Same leaves.
The difference is, one is connected to the Vine and one is not.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
If anyone does not abide in me he is like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned” (John 15:5–6).
There are infinite types and shadows of Christ all throughout the Old Testament - Adam, Noah, Joseph, and King David to name a few.
And clearly we see that Moses is a type of Christ as well.
Pause it right there.
Moses, as a type of Christ, He is the vine, we are the branches.
So it could be said that we are that branch, the one in his hand.
And when we stay connected to Christ, God will do His wonders through His branch, the Body of Christ.
For apart from Him, we’re just a shriveled up old dead stick.
Another picture of this is when God commands that each of the twelve tribes provide a staff marked with their tribe’s name. Then, Moses took the staffs from each tribal chief and put them overnight in the tabernacle to demonstrate beyond any shadow of a doubt that God chose the sons of Aaron alone to come near to him as priests in his tabernacle.
Yahweh then causes Aaron’s staff—and only Aaron’s staff—to sprout with buds, blossoms, and ripe almonds.
Imagine that.
God literally gives new life to a dead branch by causing it to sprout, and every other dead branch is removed from Yahweh’s presence.
And while Moses trusted in God to lead them out of bondage and into the Promised Land,
the Egyptians trusted in bronze chariots and heavy armor — the very things that caused them to sink to the bottom of the Red Sea and plunge them to their death.
And while there are major differences between Moses and Pharaoh,
there are countless similarities between Moses and Jesus Christ.
“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth.”
-Deuteronomy 18:15
Both Jesus and Moses were in danger as babies as those in power ordered all babies 2 years old and under to be killed.
They were both hidden in Egypt to be kept alive.
Moses' mother put him in the river in a BASKET Ex.2:3
Jesus' mother put him in a MANGER Lk. 2:7
Both were brought up by men who were not their natural fathers.
Moses fasted for 40 days and 40 nights when he received the Commandments.
Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights when He received the power of the Holy Spirit.
Moses turned water into blood.
Jesus turned water into wine.
Moses parted the sea.
Jesus calmed the sea.
Moses walked through the water.
Jesus walked on the water.
Moses made a bronze serpent and put it on a pole and when the Israelites looked upon it, they were healed.
(Num. 21:9 The Lord sent fiery serpents upon the children of Israel and many died from the serpents’ bites. The Lord told Moses to make a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole. He made a serpent of brass and raised up the pole. Those who looked at it lived (see Numbers 21:8–9). This typifies Christ. Those who will look unto Him and believe will “have eternal life”)
Jesus was lifted up on a pole and All who looked upon Him by faith were healed. Jn. 3:14-15
Moses rec'd the Law.
Jesus fulfilled the Law.
Both commanded the children of Israel to keep their lamps burning continually. Lev. 24:2. Luke 12:35
Moses, at a well, was kind to the daughters of Jethro and offered water to their their flock.
Jesus, at a well, was kind to a Samaritan woman and offered her living water.
