What's the Purpose of Design Process Journals?

I encourage my design students to embrace the concept of creating a process journal as a companion to their design development and to not approach them as busy work or unnecessary.

In fact, I more than encourage them. I require them.

Keeping a record of your research and discovery, notes, ideas, color palette explorations, challenges, and decisions is useful for a variety of reasons, including understanding your own creative process. Plus, documenting your process "proves" your work is your own, and how you brought it into being.
