Trap-Tag-Haze: Managing Human-Bear Conflicts in the Tahoe Basin

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has teamed up with California State Parks and other Tahoe-area agencies to trap, tag and haze as many Tahoe black bears as possible to identify individual bears, build a genetic database of the population, assess its overall health, and learn whether related bears are passing down problem behaviors from one generation to the next. The bears are hazed – but not harmed – upon release to give them a negative human interaction and to see whether the hazing keeps them away from campgrounds, people and conflict in the future.
