Why do some tomatoes have white bumps? The white bumps you see on tomato stems are actually a form of root development. This can be a sign of deficiency but generally you do not have to worry. The other odd thing we see on tomatoes is the hairs. These hairs are not roots and will never become roots. The hairs on tomato stems are actually called trichomes and these are specially designed organs to help with protecting the plant from pests. Ashley is an agronomist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery.
