Mentioned in a science-fiction story from the 1870's, an American inventor named Stan Meyer found an efficient way (not electrolysis) to split water into its hydrogen and oxygen components, and used this technology to power a car.
Shortly after his creation was taken by the military-industrial complex, Stan was mysteriously killed and his amazing invention fell into obscurity.
