As part of the Quinntessential "Core 54", an 80/20 approach to training, there are five key footwork drills and patterns everyone should be aware of. What are they, how can they be trained well, and how can they help your movement?

Without good footwork, even the best techniques are impotent. Yet, with well-trained footwork, even someone with average technique becomes very effective. So it is logical to spend more time working on your footwork skills from very early in your training life.

In the Seven Stages of Kumite I have developed, the first step after getting your default shape right is footwork. So it is important to develop fluid footwork skills from the beginning.

Check out Marvin Cook and his excellent teaching style that teaches the key principles of balance and footwork:

He offers some fantastic insights about footwork. It is from a boxing perspective so you can make some small adjustments to use it with your boxing training.

Keep an eye out for my new book due out at the end of 2021, The Budo Blueprint, where I share training ideas and principles you will find very useful for your own training.

As part of the Quinntessential Core 54, there are five main footwork drills:
1. Split
2. Oi-ashi
3. Okuri-ashi

I'll cover them here today.
