Radiological Threat Inside Abandoned Washington State Nuclear Reactor

The Satsop Nuclear Power Station in Elma, Washington was never finished and is one of the largest bond defaults in US history at $2.2 Billion. But even though this facility has never been used to generate any power, it has been used to train emergency services on different scenarios. Some of which involve real radioactive sources as a threat. In this exercise the reactor building was made to simulate a below deck area of a Naval ship that had radiological experiments happening on the lower decks. Lost of power and explosions crippled the ship...for the exercise. Firefighters needed to check entire operating area for casualties and proceed safely through radiological threat areas.

Special thanks to ERTI for inviting me to this training exercise.
