Based on I Am Legend By Richard Matheson, author of The Raven screenplay, Somewhere in Time, the short story that became the Twilight Zone episode Nightmare at 20,000 feet. Matheson hated the film and insisted that the name be changed and that he be removed from the credits. Matheson later said the film was the most faithful adaptation of his book, but he also called the result "inept" and used a pen name for his screenplay.

Robert Morgan is a scientist played by Vincent Price. A plague emerges killing the society rapidly. Then the dead start rising at night, including Morgan’s deceased wife. The dead are very zombie-like creatures but carnivorous, bent of killing the living.

Keeping in touch with other survivors by amateur radio, Morgan slumps into a depression. He departs his fortified house every day. He kills vampires with wooden stakes block by block. Deaths mount for humanity, tho and eventually Morgan is the last man.

Morgan declares he has become a legend to the vampires, much like Dracula has become to us.

In the movie, the vampires are zombie-like but the novel made them fast. Morgan considers them unintelligent and weak. Their strength is in numbers but they remain sensitive to sunlight.

I think the movie shows another deeper range of acting by Vincent Price than we normally get to see. It is suspenseful and entertaining but the convictions of the vampires in underserved which weakens the ending.

This is a must watch for horror movie fans!
