Rooing Chorus for the First Time

Rooing is an ancient technique used in the Shetland Isles in Scotland to remove the old wool from their sheep (specifically the Shetland sheep which are heritage breed). By pulling gently on the wool, the old fibers begin to break away from the new. Shetland sheep have kept their ability to shed their wool because they have not been modified like the modern sheep. It was an adaptive mechanism to be able to cope with cold and warm temperatures alike throughout the year.

This was our first time trying to roo our sheep after learning about this method of wool removal.
