New Beef Steer Arrives at the Farm (Chaos Ensues)
We picked up a new beef steer from our friends at Futrell Farms and he’s going to fit right in with our other troublemaking farm animals (looking at you, Bonnie and Clyde). Why did we get another steer, and what did he do to start out on the naughty list?
We purchased this beef steer from Futrell Farms in Cadiz, KY. They are a wonderful family who raise excellent beef cattle. If you are interested in purchasing beef from the Futrells reach out to them at the link below. Tell them we sent you!

We just had a steer processed in February 2021, so why are we already getting another one? We can see a huge improvement in our pasture quality from one year ago when we first added a steer to the farm. We attribute this improvement to the rotational grazing plan we’re implementing on our farm. As our animals (cattle, goats, etc.) move through the field they eat grasses and forbs, fertilizing the soil as they go. The change from one year ago is stark. Because we don’t need this beef for our own freezer we’ll be selling him, allowing us to save for next year’s beef and benefitting our land in the process.
Barely 48 hours after the steer arrives he jumps the fence and heads over to the neighbor’s place, presumably to hang out with their small herd of cattle. For two hours we chased him around the fields and through the woods, never convincing him to head through the back gate into the field he left earlier. We were finally able to corral him at the neighbor’s farm and we loaded him into a trailer and brought him home. He’ll spend the next week or so in the barn until he associates us as friends (and learns to follow the feed bucket). And yes, we did fix the fence!
Hopefully the next several months are smoother sailing than the last couple of days. We’ll be bringing you along throughout the whole process so subscribe so you won’t miss a video! Thanks for watching!
