On June 1st, 2021, a group of 100 academics signed a statement that proclaims that recent voting reform laws in states such as Georgia, Texas, and others represent a threat to democracy, among other negative things. The statement is titled "Statement of Concern: The Threats to American Democracy and the Need for National Voting and Election Administration Standards." This letter calls for the federalization of all state elections to "protect Democracy" against state legislatures. Mr. Watson philosophically analyzes this letter and uses it as an opportunity to examine both the structure of the American experiment and its animating principles. Furthermore, he dissects the assumptions made about America by these academics and explains why they largely do not hold up under philosophical scrutiny. He calls for his audience not to be wooed by emotional appeals and soft rhetoric, as they are no substitutes for concrete, provable reality, in which America's example is firmly anchored.
