Carla grew up in South Africa -- a country that she called a "nationalist police state". She experienced the apartheid regime, a racially charged and divided society and stringent restrictions on citizens' daily lives. She won the lottery to immigrate to America, where she'd found invigorating individual freedoms that she loved and thrived on.
