A Valentine's Message From Lily Tang Williams

Happy Valentine's Day! This is a day to celebrate love, friendship and above all, humanity. When I was a child growing up in China, I didn't even know that this holiday existed, because romance was banned, and the loving sentiments between a man and a woman were condemned as capitalist or bourgeois. I was never allowed to look pretty despite my natural desires for beauty as a young girl. My parents called each other "male comrade" and "female comrade" instead of "husband and wife", as those were censored words under communism -- because communism is never about love, it's about hate, division, and suppressing human emotions.

Today, I am free to wear whatever I want; I can pursue beauty and express my feelings without restraint in the Land of the Free. And yet, I see so many young people here today romanticizing and idealizing communism. As an eye-witness to communism in practice and in reality -- where the utopian society promised by the books never came, instead, hatred and destruction took over -- I want to invite you to celebrate with me on this Valentine's Day one of our most profound and precious human emotions -- love.

May your day be filled with joy, laughter and warmth from all your loved ones!
