"FIXER UPPER" - (Week 1) -|- 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

• INTRODUCTION: Hey Fathom Church!
o We are starting a sermon series called “FIXER - UPPER”
 Paul knew the church in CORINTH really well!
• Paul Spent 1.5 years there as a missionary (ACTS 18)

 5 AREAS OF CONCERN – (reports of huge problems in Corinth)
• Divisions – Factionalism, Sectarianism, Disunity…
• Sexual Sin – Perversion in the name of Grace…
• Food Disputes – Freedom in Christ, “Stumbling Block”…
• The Gathering – Worship Service, Orderliness, Chaos…
• The Resurrection – False teaching, HIGHEST PRIORITY!

o In every section – Paul Describes the Problem
 BUT … then responds to the problem through “Gospel Lens”
• Think about every part of life through the “Gospel Lens”
o INTIMACY – IDENTITY – IMPACT

1 Corinthians 1:1-9
1 Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes,

o “PAUL”: Name means “little” – Least of the Saints
 Paul and Thecla “a man small of stature, with a bald head and crooked legs, in a good state of body, with eyebrows meeting and nose somewhat hooked”
o APOSTLE: Apostolic Authority the Right to Write Scripture.
To speak with delegated Authority from God! (((Not Merely “Sent”)))
 “I have the authority to tell this church (or any gentile church) what to do! He is not a traveling evangelist – he is an apostle!
• “CALLED” – Divine/Sovereign
o (His Apostolic Authority is Questioned)
o SOSTHENES:
 Acts 18:17 “And they all seized SOSTHENES, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal, but none of these things mattered to Gallio.”
• Same Guy? Paul’s Amanuensis/Scribe? One of Chloe’s People?

2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

o CHURCH: Called out Group of People Belonging to God!
 “… church of God that is in Corinth” – Local Church
 “All those who in every place …” – Universal Church
o SANCTIFIED – Consecrated – Made Acceptable – Holy – Set Apart
o SAINTS – (Plural ) Holy b/c of Jesus – NOT b/c of their deeds!!!
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

o GRACE AND PEACE …
 Grace (χάρις - charis) sounds like Greetings (χαιρειν - khaîren)
• Greek Greeting and then Jewish greeting?
o Grace - then - Peace?
o FROM: only 2 preposition “from” with 2 objects God Father and Jesus!
o LORD – JESUS – CHRIST
 Jesus = Joshua (no J’s in Hebrew – no Y’s in German)
• Yeshua – “Yahweh Saves” – Affirms His Humanity by itself
 LORD = YHWH (Adonai)
• Jesus being called Lord is to equate Him with DIVINITY!
 Christ = Messiah (Anointed One)

4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus,

o THANKS …
 Bear this in mind when we start reading about all of the problems!

5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge — 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you —

o SPEECH and KNOWLEDGE …
 Speech – Oratory, public speaking, tongues, preachers (Apollos)
 Knowledge – Philosophy (Plato-Aristotle)
7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

o GIFT: … Charismata
 God wills that every local church have access to every spiritual gift!

8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

o Sustain … some translations say “Guarantee”
 Guiltless – some translations say “Vindicated”
• Wait until we get into this churches problems …

9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

o Faithful … dependable, trustworthy, true!
 If God can work with Corinth … I guarantee you He can work with us and He can work with you!
